Tracking Traffic from LLM-assisted Search with Google Analytics 4

Tracking traffic from AI chatbots is becoming more important as these tools change the way people search and interact online. They’re not just reshaping search behavior—they’re also influencing how users find your website. The good news? Setting up tracking for this in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is easier than you might think. Let’s break it down step by step.

Why Track AI Chatbot Traffic?

Monitoring traffic from AI chatbots can give you powerful insights, such as:

  • Spotting Changes in Traditional Traffic: See how chatbot traffic is affecting your usual organic visitors.

  • Understanding User Preferences: Learn which AI search tools your audience is using most.

  • Pinpointing Click-Worthy Pages: Identify the pages that grab attention from AI-generated answers.

How to Track AI Chatbot Traffic in GA4

Ready to get started? Here’s how you can set up tracking to capture this valuable data.

Step 1: Create an Exploration

  1. Log in to your GA4 account, navigate to Explore and create a new Blank exploration.

  2. In Variables - Click the + for Dimensions and search for Page Referrer, select and Confirm. This will tell you where your visitors are coming from. Repeat for dimensions Landing Page + Query String and Session Source/Medium.

  3. In Variables - Click the + for Metrics and search for Sessions as the metric to measure the number of visits. Select and Confirm. Repeat for metrics Views, Total Users and Engaged Sessions.

Step 2: Apply a Filter to a Segment

  1. In Variables - Click the + for Segment, click Create New Segment, Click Session Segment. Name the segment AI Traffic.

  2. To focus on traffic coming from popular AI chatbots, Add a new condition Page Referrer. Add a filter for match regex and use this filter:

^https:\/\/(www\.meta\.ai|www\.perplexity\.ai|chat\.openai\.com|claude\.ai|chat\.mistral\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|bard\.google\.com|chatgpt\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com)(\/.*)?$

This filter works like a smart assistant—it sorts through the data and picks out visitors coming from specific AI tools.

What You’ll Learn

With this setup, you’ll uncover actionable insights like:

  • LLM Optimized Content: Analyze which content is being discovered by LLMs

  • Which AI Platforms Matter: Identify the chatbots that are driving traffic to your site.

  • Top-Performing Content: See what type of content appeals most to users coming through AI tools.

  • Emerging Trends: Spot patterns in how people interact with your site through AI, helping you optimize for future opportunities.

Take the Next Step

By tracking traffic from AI chatbots, you’ll gain a clearer picture of how generative AI is shaping your audience’s behavior and your website’s performance. Setting up GA4 with this tracking method will give you the edge in understanding which platforms and content strategies are worth your focus.
